Kole Wetland Ecosystem Kerala : Significance Challenges and new initiatives 2021

KOLE  WETLAND

Kole land is a brackish wetland ecosystem seen at Thrissur-Ponnani regions of Kerala state, It is significant for it’s high productivity and repository for migratory birds. The word Kole means – Bumper harvest.


Uniqueness of Kole Land Ecosystem
  • Situating around 3m below mean sea level
  • Fertility due to alluvial deposition from adjacent river

Seed variety using for cultivation :

  • Extra short duration - Hraswa
  • Short duration - karthika, Revathi, Jyothi, Onam, Varsha, KAU Manurathna
  • Medium duration – Uma, Jaya

Significance of kole land                                                                

  • One of the Ramsar site from kerala
  • Highly fertile land
  • Granary of Thrissur district
  • Situating around 3m below mean sea level
  • More than 34 type of butterflies
  • More than 70 species of fishes reported
  • Repository of more than 50 species of migratory birds
  • Biodiversity rich land area
  • Practicing sustainable methods of agriculture

Challenges facing :

  • Intrusion of salt water from canoly canal & Improper management of regulator and vale
  • City expansion of Thrissur
  • Conversion to commercial plantations like coconut
  • Brick and clay kiln and mining
  • Pollution of water bodies
  • Delay in deepening of canals
  • Shortage of labor and high wages
  • Flood and acidity after 2018 flood
  • Delay in distribution of price of paddy procured

Recent initiatives by  kerala government to develop Kole land :

  • Operation kole double project
  • Punarjani (After 2018 flood)
  • Rebuild kerala
  • Submerged pump rather than petti & para

  • Indian whistling duck
  • whiskered tern
  • Greater spotted eagle
  • Black bellied tern
